Pews News – 3rd December 2017

3rd December 2017 – First Sunday of Advent

Welcome
St Andrew’s Church welcomes allcomers, whether this is your first time or thousandth time in church. You are welcome whatever your age, gender, marital status, disability, race or sexuality. You are welcome whether you have a deep and mature faith in Christ; are uncertain and still seeking; or have no faith. If you are new to church, please do take a welcome leaflet to be found in the pews; and do not hesitate to ask one of the welcomers if you have any queries.

St Andrew’s Prayer Bear
This morning we are welcoming St Andrew’s Prayer Bear into our church. He loves to be hugged and will share any worries with God. Emma will look after him, but he enjoys ‘sleep-overs’ so she is happy to share him for a short while with any child who has a need.

Safeguarding
Those people who attended C0 training will be aware there is now a pro forma for recording concerns or allegations of abuse within a church. This form is now pinned onto the noticeboard at the back of church should it be required. Thank you, Linda Chylinski.

Thanks
Many thanks from Greg and Fran for the sympathy cards and condolence messages following the death of Greg’s dad recently. Your love, kindness and prayers have helped so much at this difficult time.

Toy Service
This morning sees our annual Toy Service at Worship 4 All. If you have toys to give, but have been unable to bring them this morning, you will be able to bring them during daylight hours during the week ahead.

Thank you
Thank you so much for the get well cards and messages I received during my recent stay in hospital, and for all your prayers which have helped me and my family over the last couple of weeks. We have felt truly blessed. Beryl and Stan Cooper.

Congratulations
To Stanley and Lucia who are to be married next Saturday at 10.30am. The congregation are warmly invited to join them in celebrating their wedding.

Bible Page Nos
We have asked readers to announce page numbers when introducing bible readings. For those of you who don’t like to be rushed in finding the right page, please note the page numbers are recorded in Pews News each week. Having bought 20 new bibles, it would be great if lots more people were following the readings.

Kidz Praise
Our fortnightly Kidz Praise service has its Christmas celebration on Thursday 7th December, with doors opening at 3.15pm for craft, games and songs, followed by a short service at 4pm for Primary School children and their families.

Thank you
A huge “thank you” to all who supported the 60’s/70’s evening. A great time was had by all, and we raised £707.90 for church funds. Brilliant!

Christmas Cards for Prisoners of Conscience
Our annual card writing evening is on Wednesday 6th December at 7.30pm in the side room. We shall be writing cards to prisoners of conscience around the world (with guidance on wording from Amnesty International). Seasonal refreshments are provided. Donations towards postage will be gratefully received even if you’re unable to come. Trevor Hill & Flix Haynes.

Link Deliverer Needed
Volunteer to take over a round in Sutton Avenue. 153-203 and 162-204 (52 copies). Perhaps someone who lives there or close to would consider this delivery round. Please see or contact Barbara Warner 02476 403458/07846 288036. Many thanks in anticipation.

Lantern Walk
On 10th December from 4-6pm we will be running the Lantern Walk (with donkeys!) on Bannerbrook Park, meeting at the Penny Farthing. All welcome!

Nightingales
Please note that the Nightingales concert on 10th December has been cancelled because of illness for Pat Trickett, their musical director. Please do pray for her as she awaits surgery.

Darkness to Light
Our Darkness to Light service which marks the start of Advent takes place this evening 3rd December at 6.30pm. This is a moving and atmospheric way to start the Advent season. We are looking for readers for the service. If able to help, please speak to Greg.

Christmas Services
Greg would like to hear from anyone who would like to read or act as sidesperson at the carol service or midnight service or Christmas Day Holy Communion service.

Bible Video Project
St Andrew’s will be making a short video in the new year, interviewing people about what they get out of reading the bible. We are looking for volunteers to speak to camera for about 40 seconds. We are looking for people who don’t mind talking about the difficulties as well as the joys of bible reading. If you might be interested, please speak to Sue Masters.

Pram Service
Our final Pram Service of 2017 will take place at 9.15am on Tuesday 12th December. We will be saying farewell to Lynda who has led us for the last three years, as well as celebrating the nativity story. All pre-school children and their carers welcome.

Nativity 2017
St Andrew’s will be staging a live nativity on Bannerbrook Park on December 14th and 15th 2017.  Tickets are available from Julie at administrator@standrews-eg.org.uk or 07756 918847 at a cost of £5 adults and £2 children. Please book early to avoid disappointment. If anyone has hurricane lamps (or similar) they could lend to the production, please speak to Kate Howarth or Greg.

Altar Flowers
This week’s altar flowers were kindly donated by Ann Dove and Betty Rippingale.
