18th February 2018 – The First Sunday of Lent
St Andrew’s Church welcomes allcomers, whether this is your first time or thousandth time in church. You are welcome whatever your age, gender, marital status, disability, race or sexuality. You are welcome whether you have a deep and mature faith in Christ; are uncertain and still seeking; or have no faith. If you are new to church, please do take a welcome leaflet to be found in the pews; and do not hesitate to ask one of the welcomers if you have any queries.
As it is the start of half term Children’s Church will not be meeting in the school today. A craft box of activities is available for children to use in the side room during today’s service. Children’s Church will meet again as normal next Sunday, when we will begin a series of sessions about people Jesus met. We have space for more children to join us. For further information please contact Hilary on 07980 596646.
General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)
On the 25th May 2018, General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) will replace the Data Protection Act of 1998. The good news is that the GDPR main concepts and principles are very similar to those contained in the current act. As a church we take the responsibility of your personal data very seriously, with the new rules coming into effect, we must contain consent to hold your personal information. At any point you can ask for all data being held on you, and for all information to be removed. The information will only be shared by the leadership team for activities within the church or pastoral needs. Consent forms are being distributed over the next couple of weeks, please ensure these are returned to Becky Crowe or Linda Chylinski.
We are looking for volunteers to join the Sunday Service Rota, particularly for dressing the Altar before the 10am Sunday Service. This would require those who feel they would be able to help arriving at church in good time to have the Altar prepared before the majority of worshipers arrive. This is not an arduous or complicated task and full instruction will be given. The frequency of duty would be every three or four weeks, depending on the number of volunteers coming forward. Those interested please contact Greg or Steve Wankling. Thank you.
We thought it might be helpful to know when Church staff are not available.
Greg & Phil’s day off is usually Friday.
Emma is off from 6pm Friday until 9am Sunday.
Julie’s working hours are 8am-2pm Monday & Wednesday and 8am-12pm Friday
Please only disturb them in the event of death or serious illness.
To raise funds for the church we intend to hold an Easter raffle and would be grateful for donations of prizes. If you are able to donate please pass you item(s) to Charley Watts or Linda Chylinski. Thank you.
St. Andrew’s Lent Group 2018
Thinking about what to give up for Lent –biscuits, chocolate, your glass of wine? Why not try a different approach this year and take something up for Lent, like looking at the Bible, reflecting on the significance of Jesus life and sacrifice, sharing together with others. The Lent group could be the place for you to do this. This year we will be meeting on Monday mornings from 10.30am to 12.00 noon at 55 Handsworth Crescent. The morning will include a time for fellowship and group discussion as we share together. All are welcome and if you have never been to a small group or to a Bible study group why not come along and be part of this group during Lent. If you want to know more or you are interested in being part of the group please speak with Sue Masters or email me on firstname.lastname@example.org.
If you would like to make a donation towards the cost of the Easter flowers please see Ann Dove.
As we look forward to our Palm Sunday re-enactment of the passion story, we are looking for volunteer performers, seamstresses and prop makers. Anyone who would like to help in any way should speak to Greg or Kate Howarth. Actors should be 8+.
Parish Weekend Friday 20th to Sunday 22nd April 2018
WHAT IS IT? A weekend away for members of St Andrew’s/St Andy’s to come together for Bible teaching, worship, prayer and fellowship. WHERE IS IT? Shallowford House, Staffordshire (about an hour’s drive from Coventry). WHO IS IT FOR? Everyone including children. There is a cost of £140 per adult (with reductions for children) which includes all meals. There is an early bird discount of £10 if booked before 25th February. Interested? Want to know more? Speak with Sue Masters 07958322026 or Greg Smith.
Bible Video Project
St Andrew’s will be making a short video in the coming weeks, interviewing people about what they get out of reading the bible. We are looking for volunteers to speak to camera for about 40 seconds. We are looking for people who don’t mind talking about the difficulties as well as the joys of bible reading. If you might be interested, please speak to Sue Masters.
Anyone who is able to help out at Kidz Klub on Tues 27th March from 5-6.15pm to help with refreshments etc. should contact Sarah Adamson at email@example.com. Kidz Klub is based at Limbrick Wood Baptist Church and is supported by St Andrew’s in prayer and with occasional financial support because of their commitment to sharing God’s love with the children of Tile Hill. You can also support them at this time by buying a Real Easter Egg or donating £4 so that each child receives an Easter Egg. Please give eggs or money to Greg (He promises not to eat the eggs!).
Christians Against Poverty
Are looking for volunteers to act as befrienders, who will accompany one of the Christians Against Poverty staff as they visit clients in the area who are trying to free themselves from debt. For further information, contact IanBurton@CAPUK.org or speak to Greg.
Forget me Not
Our new group for people living with dementia and their carers continues on Tuesday 27th February at 2pm in church. For further details, please speak to Rita.
Allesley Green Prayer Group
A small group meet to pray for Allesley Green once a month. Our next gathering is on Tuesday 20th February at 7.30pm at 27 Polperro Drive.
There is some urgent remedial work needing to be undertaken on the church roof, costing approximately £700, which was not anticipated in the church budget for the year. Without these repairs, we will soon be experiencing climate change inside the church! Anyone who feels called to make a contribution towards meeting this bill, and who can afford to do so without it effecting their regular giving could put a gift in an envelope marked roof appeal and place it on the offertory plate or give it directly to a sidesperson or churchwarden. All gifts will be greatly appreciated.
We are looking to recruit an additional audio-visual operator to join our select team of Steve and Paul. This would only require a once in a while commitment on a Sunday morning to cover holidays. Full training provided. Concentration is the most important gift needed!
Another fun Quiz Night is planned for Friday 2nd March at the Massey Ferguson Social Club at 7pm. Tickets are available from Rita or Julie at firstname.lastname@example.org or 07756 918847. They cost £9 adults and £5 children, including a fish & chip supper. The event is jointly organised by the church and Allesley Green Residents Association.
Our latest newsletter from Dan & Phillipa Munday, our Mission Partners, is at the back of church (in the red folder).
The three questions posed by the Christian faith:
Who do you say He is?
Do you love Him?
What are you going to do now?
