Pews News – 29th April 2018

29th April 2018 – The Fifth Sunday of Easter

Welcome
St Andrew’s Church welcomes allcomers, whether this is your first time or thousandth time in church. You are welcome whatever your age, gender, marital status, disability, race or sexuality. You are welcome whether you have a deep and mature faith in Christ; are uncertain and still seeking; or have no faith. If you are new to church, please do take a welcome leaflet to be found in the pews; and do not hesitate to ask one of the welcomers if you have any queries.

Parish Weekend
Many thanks to Sue Masters (organiser), Emma Wildman and Team (children’s team), Steve Wankling (photographer) and Phil/Jill (worship team) and everyone else for their fellowship for a truly fantastic Parish Weekend. Details about next year will appear shortly.

Cleaning
After many, many years Diane Wilson has decided to hang up her mop. She has epitomised loyalty and professionalism in this role. In replacing her, we want to investigate whether it might be possible to recruit a band of volunteers to clean for an hour once a week. We probably need 5 people altogether to allow volunteers to take a week off when necessary. If you are interested in helping, please speak to Greg, Diane or Jackie Lynch.

APCM
At the Annual Meeting, Becky Crowe and Nick Tooby were elected as Church Wardens. Jill Pinks was elected as a Deanery Synod Rep and the following were elected to the PCC: Trevor Hill, Jeremy Thomas, Richard Marr, Hilary Wankling, Paul Crowe, Gill Tunnicliffe, John Ross-Barnard, Kate Dagger, Rita Muir, Linda Chylinski and Rosemarie Over.  Please pray for them as they take on this responsibility. Copies of the annual report and Treasurer’s Report are available at the back of church. Please free to take these away, although the annual report should be returned within a week.

Annual Plant Sale
This will take place in the Church and side room on Saturday 12th May between 10am and 12 pm. We welcome your support, either by supplying plants, buying the cheapest plants on sale in the area, helping out. If you require any more information contact Trevor Hill at church or David Griffiths – tel:01675 442240, email edgriff@uwclub.net.

Eco Church
St Andrew’s Church is hosting the Big Brekkie on Sunday 13th May as part of raising money for Christian Aid Week. It starts at 9am until 9.45am and then continues after the service. We are asking for donations of easy to serve breakfast items, your time or money to support this worthy cause. For more information, please see Paul, Veronika, Selina, Gill Pinks or Dawn.

Children’s Holiday Club
We would like to hold a holiday club for primary aged children on Monday 23rd and Tuesday 24th July, but to do this we need lots of volunteers – male and female! We will plan activities as a team and training and support will be given as necessary. We need people to help with games, craft activities, serve drinks and snacks and give general support. A holiday club would be a great way to further our children’s ministry within the parish, but we can only go ahead if we have adequate child:adult ratios. If you are interested in helping (even if it is only for a few hours) and would like more information, please speak to Hilary or phone 07980 596646. A firm commitment is needed by the end of May to give us time to plan activities and advertise the event. Many thanks, Hilary.

Mobility Scooter
A mobility scooter, free to a good home, is available. If you or anyone you know needs this, please speak to Greg.

Ascension Day
There will be a service of 40 minutes with 2 hymns and Holy Communion on Ascension Day, Thursday May 10th at 7pm. All welcome.

Font
After nearly two years of delay, we are now in a position to press forward with plans to remove the font (which will be interred in the churchyard) and replace it with a wooden, portable font. We are immensely grateful to Stan & Beryl Cooper who have agreed to pay for this in memory of their baby daughter; and to Frank Dove who has undertaken to craft the new stand for the font. Please speak to Trevor Hill if you have any queries.

Poetry Evening
A chance to enjoy the performance of many and varied poems and to share your own favourites. At Eastern Green Village Hall on Saturday 19th May from 7pm to 10pm. Tickets cost £8 and include coffee and cake (or tea and cake if you prefer). Tickets available at St Andrew’s Church, St Andy’s Church or directly from Stephen and Eileen Warne. You are welcome to bring wine or beer if you wish. If you wish to choose a poem to be read, if you are happy to choose and read it yourself, or if you would be willing to read a poem someone else has chosen, please contact Stephen or Eileen Warne on 024 7647 1350.

Alpha Course 2018
Want to learn more about Jesus, the Bible, faith? Why not be part of the Alpha Course which starts on Wednesday 23rd May. We meet at the Vicarage, are served a wonderful home cooked meal, make new friends, listen to a talk on a key aspect of the Christian faith and then take part in a small group discussion with a handful of others who are seeking to know more and share their doubts and questions. The talks are designed to encourage conversation and explore the basics of the Christian faith in a friendly, open and informal environment. The evenings start at 7pm and the course runs over eight weeks, with an Away Day during that eight-week period. If you would like more information or want to join the course please speak with Greg Smith or Sue Masters 07958 322026 or susanmasters@sky.com

Alpha Caterers Needed
The Alpha course runs for 8 weeks at the Vicarage from 23rd May to 11th July. We are looking for volunteers to provide a meal, help to serve and clear away after the meal. Caterers would be paid for each evening catered for. If you would be willing to cater for one evening (or more) please contact the Parish Administrator on 07756 918847 or administrator@standrews-eg.org.uk

Children’s Society Boxes
My thanks to all loyal supporters of this worthy charity. The boxes have been emptied and counted and a grand total of £1208.04 has been sent to help rescue disadvantaged and abused children. It is amazing how loose change can amount to so much! Thanks again, see you next year. Please contact Jackie Lynch on 76467344, if you would like to become a supporter.

Altar Servers
We would like to supplement our small team of altar servers, who set up the altar for communion on an occasional basis. If you are able to help, please speak to Greg, Steve Wankling or Rita.

Sponsored Walk
A group of intrepid walkers will be raising funds by walking in September. Anyone is welcome to join us, either by walking or by offering support. There is a planning meeting at the Vicarage at 7.15pm on Thursday 3rd May.

Deanery Synod
There will be a talk on faith and science at Deanery Synod on Tues 8th May at 7.30pm at St James Church on Tile Hill Lane. All welcome to attend. You do not need to be a synod member. (See poster at the back of church).

Screen Technician
We are looking to recruit an additional audio-visual operator to join our select team of Steve and Paul. This would only require a once in a while commitment on a Sunday morning to cover holidays. Full training provided. Concentration is the most important gift needed!

Kidz Praise
Our next Kidz Praise service for Primary School children and their families takes place on Thursday 3rd May. Families are welcome to arrive any time between 3.15pm and 4pm with craft activities, games and songs, followed by stories and prayer. The theme of our next service is Let my People go!

Party in the Park Volunteers
St Andrew’s is always very generous in providing volunteers for Party in the Park. We trust this year will be no exception. We need people to help set up at 9.30am through to 11am. Some heavy lifting included. We also need lots of people to staff stalls during the afternoon. Please let Greg know if you are able to help.

Prayer Tent
We are looking for a large tent or Gazebo that can be used at Party in the Park on 7th May as a Prayer Tent. Anyone able to help should speak to Greg or Veronika.

Cakes
Anyone willing to make cakes or savouries e.g. sausage rolls for Party in the Park on May 7th should speak to Fran. The more the better!

Thy Kingdom Come
An international prayer movement, initiated by the Archbishop of Canterbury three years ago, is now embraced by millions. Each year between the Ascension (May 10th) and Pentecost (May 20th) churches are encouraged to pray for the coming of the Kingdom. You can pledge to pray as an individual or family at https://www.thykingdomcome.global/ You are also encouraged to come along on Saturday 12th May any time between 3 – 5pm when there will be prayer stations available to help you pray. The upper room in the church will be available to pray in from 6-9pm every week night 14-18 May and on Sunday 13th May between 8.30-9.30am. You are welcome to pop in any time to pray, but there is also a rota to ensure that someone is praying in church throughout this period. Anyone, who would like devotional material to help them pray through this 10-day period can obtain it via the website.

Archbishop of Canterbury
The Archbishop of Canterbury is visiting Coventry in early May and wants to meet as many people as possible. There is a free centenary festival on Saturday 5th May at the Cathedral from 10.30am – 4pm. Entrance is free and as many people as possible are encouraged to attend. You can pop in at any time.  Please see poster at the back of church for further details.
