19th August 2018 – Twelfth Sunday after Trinity
St Andrew’s Church welcomes allcomers, whether this is your first time or thousandth time in church. You are welcome whatever your age, gender, marital status, disability, race or sexuality. You are welcome whether you have a deep and mature faith in Christ; are uncertain and still seeking; or have no faith. If you are new to church, please do take a welcome leaflet to be found in the pews; and do not hesitate to ask one of the welcomers if you have any queries.
Children’s Church will not be meeting in the school hall during the summer holiday. There are folders available (in the side room) with colouring activities, which children may take into church to do while they sit with their parents. Alternatively, parents are welcome to take their children into the side room where there is a craft box on the table next to the photocopier. Please use any of the items in this box and do feel free to leave the side room doors open so you can still feel part of the service. Children’s Church will return on Sunday, 9th September.
Phil has now begun his paternity leave. The baby is due today! Please do pray for him and Anne as they await this happy event and also settle into their new home to which they moved last week. The new address is 23 Mary Herbert St, Cheylesmore, CV3 2ER. Although you may see Phil around (and hopefully baby!) over the next couple of months, he won’t be working again until Oct 6th. Please do respect this special family time.
Volunteers for New Project at Coventry Foodbank
In September Coventry Foodbank is starting a new project in collaboration with Coventry Citizens Advice called Resilience. This service aims to listen to people as they come to foodbank, asking foodbank guests questions about their circumstances and signposting them onto the right services so that they can get as much support as possible. It will be run by a team from Coventry Citizens Advice, along with a group of volunteers. If anyone is interested in becoming a volunteer as part of this new project please see the poster on the noticeboard at the back of church, there are application forms for anyone who would like to apply.
The Berkswell Charities’ are seeking to appoint a Clerk which may suit a suitably qualified person. Please see the advert on the noticeboard at the back of church.
The PCC agreed to introduce a Social Committee to co-ordinate a programme of events to meet three aims
1) Build fellowship
2) Encourage non-church members to build relationships with the church
3) Fund raising for the churches mission.
We are looking for 5 or 6 people who would be interested in joining the group and to support the above aim. We are looking especially for people who are keen on organising and co-ordinating activities. The group is not expected to plan and run all events, but certainly will be expected to take an active role in taking forward some of them. This is without doubt an important ministry within the church and without willing volunteers the life of the church will be poorer, both financially, but also as a family who join together in fellowship. Please don’t be shy….the good news is we have terms of reference for the committee, so what more could you want!
Encountering God in Worship
This morning, we continue a short sermon series on Encountering God in Worship.
We have finally received legal permission to remove the existing font and install a new portable font, which Frank Dove has very kindly and very skilfully completed to David Joyce’s excellent design. Many thanks again to Beryl and Stan Cooper who have generously sponsored this project and to Trevor Hill who has tirelessly pursued the Diocese to get an answer.
We now have a band of volunteers who have agreed to take on the cleaning of the church. It would be helpful still to have one or two more. If you would like to know more about what it entails please speak to Greg, Fran or Jackie Lynch.
A dozen walkers undertook the southern third of the Heart of England Way (approximately 35 miles) last Saturday, walking from Alcester to Bourton-on-the-Water. There were many joys along the way: seeing the sunrise over the Cotswolds, enjoying wildlife (foxes, hares and grouse) that only come out in the early hours, the wonderful fellowship as we faced up this challenge; the selfless devotion of the support crew; and hearing a 7 year-old complain because he was only allowed to walk 7 miles. There were also trials along the way: having a blister after only 4 miles; getting drenched during the final third of the walk when we were most tired; and getting lost because the Vicar misremembered the route. It has all been worth it because of the incredibly generous response of our sponsors and the excellent cause we are supporting. We are raising funds for the church and for a memorial garden at St Andrew’s School in memory of Brandon Gurney the 6 year old who died at Christmas. The good news is that it’s still not too late to sponsor us.
Our next Pram Service (now known as Tots Praise), specially designed for pre-school children and their families, takes place Tuesday, August 28th at 9.15am with doors open from 8.45am. The service consists of stories, songs, craft and prayers for little ones as well as refreshments served both before and after the service.
A new Social Committee is being set up to coordinate the Church’s social events. The committee won’t be responsible for all events, but for ensuring there is a good, balanced programme. If you’re interested in helping with this, please speak to Rosemarie Over
Comedy & Curry
A great evening is promised on Friday 12th October at the Village Hotel. Award winning (and very funny) comedian, Andy Kind, is appearing, having been invited by local churches. There is a two course meal provided by the Village and a great opportunity to socialise with friends and make new ones. Tickets cost £18 and are available from Rita Muir (024 7646 0744).
After a number of years in the role, Steve Wankling is going to retire in the Autumn from his responsibility for drawing up the termly Sidespersons/Readers rota. We are looking for a volunteer to take this on. Please speak to Steve if you would like further information about what is entailed.
Selina, Emma and Greg will be leading ‘Play in a Day’ at Our Lady of Assumption Catholic Church on Thursday 23rd August from 10am-4pm for children aged 8-12. The cost of the day is £4, with lunch provided. Registration via Julie, Emma or Greg in advance is not absolutely necessary but is helpful for planning purposes.
Songs of Praise
St Andrew’s will be hosting a Songs of Praise service on Sunday 23rd September at 6.30pm. Congregation members are invited to nominate their favourite hymn/song. Please either do this by giving a piece of paper to Greg or one of the churchwardens or by emailing Julie, our administrator. A few words about why you have chosen that particular hymn would be helpful but is not absolutely necessary. The Nightingales choir have kindly agreed to participate in the service.
