25th November 2018 – The Sunday next before Advent
St Andrew’s Church welcomes allcomers, whether this is your first time or thousandth time in church. You are welcome whatever your age, gender, marital status, disability, race or sexuality. You are welcome whether you have a deep and mature faith in Christ; are uncertain and still seeking; or have no faith. If you are new to church, please do take a welcome leaflet to be found in the pews; and do not hesitate to ask one of the welcomers if you have any queries.
To our five confirmation candidates Terry & Jayne Nye, Niamh McIntyre, Cezary Tabor and Jacob Fellowes, who were confirmed at Coventry Cathedral yesterday.
Volunteers urgently needed to help decorate the church for Christmas on Saturday 1st December at 9.15am. Donations towards Christmas flowers would be much appreciated. Thank you, Ann Dove.
Many, many thanks to Nick, Sue and Steve for all their hard work in putting such a powerful remembrance exhibition together. It was enjoyed by hundreds of people, church members and non-church members alike; and will live long in the memories of all those who saw it.
With Christmas fast approaching why not take time out of the busyness to meet with others to look at the Bible and share the Good News of Christmas? At St. Andrew’s we are preparing for Christmas by holding a four-week Advent group and all are welcome. We will be meeting on Tuesday mornings, at 55 Handsworth Crescent, Eastern Green, starting on Tuesday 27th November and the sessions will run from 10-11.30am. We would love you to join us. If you would like to come or want to know more, please speak with me or call me on 07958 322026. Sue Masters.
The Annual Shoebox Appeal
Has begun in Coventry. The last date for boxes to be transferred to the collection point is 29th November but I will start taking them over on Wednesday 14th November. Leaflets with instructions and labels will be at the back of the church ASAP. Please leave your boxes in the side room for collection. If you need any shoes boxes, we usually have a few to spare. Have a look at the videos on ‘You Tube’ to see the faces of the children when they receive the boxes if you haven’t already seen them, absolutely wonderful. St. Andrew’s always supports this appeal generously and I’m sure I can rely on you again this year. Many thanks, Julia McNaney.
St Andrew’s Church Christmas Fayre
The event will take place in Eastern Green Village Hall on Saturday 1st December from 1pm to 3pm. We would be grateful for donations of bottles, chocolate, cakes, bric a brac, books, nearly new items, raffle prizes, etc, anything else you can think of! Thanks, Gill Tunnicliffe & Jackie Lynch. We have been donated some bicycles to raise funds for the Fayre and currently have 1 BMX Alley to suit a 6-9 year old and 1 little girl’s Princess Bicycle to suit a 2-3 year old. If anyone is interested please see Gill for details.
Family Tea with Santa Saturday
The children’s team have invited Santa to tea on Saturday, 8th December at Eastern Green Village Hall, 3.30-5pm. There will be games, afternoon tea and Santa has promised to bring a gift for every child. We hope you will want to come too. This event is for the whole church family – children, parents, grandparents and anyone young at heart! Please note that children must be accompanied by an adult. Tickets are available from Hilary, Becky and Emma.
The PCC are keen to maintain the churchyard at its most pleasing, but it costs money we don’t have to pay for a full cutting, strimming and tidying regime. Anyone wishing to give to a churchyard fund too address this should place any gift in a clearly marked envelope. We are very grateful for the generous gifts already received.
We now have a trio of volunteers who have agreed to take on the cleaning of the church. It would be helpful still to have another team of 3 so we always have cover. It takes about 1.5 hours each Friday from 1pm. If you would like to know more about what it entails please speak to Greg, Fran or Jackie Lynch.
Allesley Green Prayer
A small group meet to pray for Allesley Green, usually on the fourth Tuesdays of the month. Anyone who would like to join us is welcome. Please speak to Veronika or Ted or come along to 14 New Ash Drive at 7.30pm on Tuesday.
Amnesty International Card Writing
There is an opportunity to send Christmas cards to prisoners of conscience this Christmas. A group of us will be doing this as a collective exercise, eating mince pies and having a seasonal drink as we go at 7.30pm on Wednesday 5th December in the side room. Anyone is welcome to join. No previous experience is necessary. The guidebooks make it clear what to say. Donations towards postage will be gratefully received even if you’re unable to come.
We are really grateful to Carys Egner who has agreed to take over the role as Facebook administrator. She can be contacted at firstname.lastname@example.org. We are hoping to keep Facebook updated with occasional devotional contributions. Anyone willing to offer an occasional piece should speak to Greg.
Darkness to Light/Toy Service
Advent Sunday on December 2nd will begin with a said communion at 8am, followed by our Toy Service at 10am. We are inviting people to bring new, unwrapped toys to church that day or in the week preceding (not afterwards please) to place under the tree, and to be distributed to children in the city who would otherwise go without at Christmas, via Coventry City Mission. That evening, we will have our candle-lit Darkness to Light Service, which many find to be a very moving start to Advent. Greg would be pleased to hear from anyone willing to volunteer to serve refreshments, act as a sidesperson or read.
Thank You Evening
All those involved in the ministry on Sunday mornings (readers, altar servers, sidespeople etc.) should have received an invitation to attend a wine and cheese thank you evening at church on Tuesday 4th December at 7.30pm. If you do help out on Sunday mornings and for whatever reason haven’t received an invitation, please do come along.
The removal of the old stone font has resulted in the base, which was made of very high-quality stone, being rendered into pieces large and small which have been deposited behind the church. Anyone who wants to use either the larger pieces decoratively or the smaller pieces as rubble is welcome to help themselves. We would encourage a voluntary contribution to church funds by way of payment.
A 6-week version of the Alpha continues tomorrow night, the 26th November at the Vicarage and continues on Monday nights until December 17th. This is an excellent way to learn about the Christian faith, with no prior knowledge expected. It’s also a good chance to get to know others in church. For further information, please speak to Greg or Dan Smith. It’s not too late to join us. Please contact Dan at email@example.com or 07918 550210.
Parish Weekend 10th to 12th May 2019
With Christmas not far away, I want to encourage you to think about next Spring and the St Andrew’s Parish weekend. Following a successful weekend this year we are doing it again in 2019 and would love you to join us. The cost will be £150 for adults with reductions for children and we will operate a saving scheme if that helps make it possible for you. There will be an early bird discount of £10 for those signing up before end of November. Places are going fast so if you are interested or would like more information please speak with Sue Masters or Greg. For those already signed up we are happy to take deposits or to start your saving plan. Please speak with Sue about this (07958322026, firstname.lastname@example.org).
This week’s altar flowers were kindly donated by Lisa Barwick.
Please pray for Derek Shale, Flix Haynes, Norah Hall, Mary Lee, Dennis Sinclair, Josie Yates, Ann Crowley, Stan Cooper, Beryl Lee and Rosemary Pottinger. To add names to the list please contact Julie at email@example.com or 07756 918847.
