Pews News – 9th December 2018

9th December 2018 – The Second Sunday of Advent

Welcome
St Andrew’s Church welcomes allcomers, whether this is your first time or thousandth time in church. You are welcome whatever your age, gender, marital status, disability, race or sexuality. You are welcome whether you have a deep and mature faith in Christ; are uncertain and still seeking; or have no faith. If you are new to church, please do take a welcome leaflet to be found in the pews; and do not hesitate to ask one of the welcomers if you have any queries.

Children’s Church
Next Sunday (16th December) will be the last time St Andrew’s Children’s Church meets this term, when our theme will be ‘Celebrating Christmas’. We open again for the spring term on 13th January 2019 with a series of sessions about God’s Creation. We will have stories, games and crafts for pre-school and primary aged children. We have room for more children, so for more information contact Hilary on 07980 596646.

Toy Service
What a fantastic response to our Toy appeal this year (special mention to Martin Neale, who brought hundreds of toys). These have now gone to Coventry City Mission to be distributed across the city to children who otherwise would have little or nothing at Christmas.

Christmas Fayre
Many thanks to all the willing helpers, who helped to make our Fayre a success, and raising £925.75 for much needed church funds. Thanks also to all who attended, without you it wouldn’t have been possible. My special thanks go to Gill and Charley, you have both been amazing. Jackie.

Family Tea with Santa
Santa had a lovely time when he visited our tea party yesterday and we hope everyone who came enjoyed it, too! It was wonderful to see families from St Andy’s and St Andrew’s joining together along with some ‘new faces’ as well. A very big thank you to Emma and the children’s team who made this event possible.

Thank You
A very big thank you to all the volunteers who give of their time to decorate our church last weekend. Thank you to Fay Gibbs for providing all the foliage needed, also to everyone who has donated towards the Christmas flowers. Thank you to all, Ann Dove

Flower List
The new flower list for 2019 will be in church from the middle of December. Unfortunately, the cost of the flowers will be £12 per week, £10 is no longer feasible. I am sorry about this. Thank you, Ann Dove.

Seek His Face
Tonight, Greg will be speaking at Seek His Face on the theme of Incarnation. The service starts at 6.30pm and usually lasts an hour.

Christmas Services
Our annual Carol Service takes place on Sunday 16th December at 6.30pm. We will also be hosting Crib Services on Christmas Eve at 2.30pm and 4pm, a very popular family occasion. This year, the theme is: Who is the Saviour of the World? Later, on Christmas Eve, there will be service of Holy Communion at 11pm to welcome in Christmas Day, with a shorter communion service the following morning at 10am.

Safeguarding Training in Coventry Diocese
The Safeguarding Courses, C1, C2 & S1 are now on the diocesan website for the next term. If you have not completed Safeguarding Training in the last 3 years and you are required to undergo C1 or C2 training for your role then please go to:

  • Click on C1 or C2 tabs on the right-hand side as appropriate
  • Scroll down to pick the date you want to come on
  • Complete the registration form on the Eventbrite system

Please note before you come along to:

  • C1 training you will have to complete the C0 – please see your parish Safeguarding Officer for details of how to do this.
  • C2 training you will need to have completed C1 first.
  • S1: Safer Recruitment training is for those involved in the recruitment of staff or volunteers.

Churchyard Fund
The PCC are keen to maintain the churchyard at its most pleasing, but it costs money we don’t have to pay for a full cutting, strimming and tidying regime. Anyone wishing to give to a churchyard fund to address this should place any gift in a clearly marked envelope. We are very grateful for the generous gifts already received.

Allesley Green Prayer Group
A small group of Allesley Green residents meet once a month to pray for the estate and each other. Our Christmas gathering takes place on Tuesday 18th December at 7.30pm at 14 New Ash Close.

Kidz Praise
The final Kidz Praise of 2018, our fortnightly service for primary school children and their families takes place on Thursday 20th December at 4pm with doors open for refreshments, craft and games from 3.15pm. All welcome. We will be telling the nativity story and having a Christmas party.

Facebook
We are really grateful to Carys Egner who has agreed to take over the role as Facebook administrator. She can be contacted at carysegner@hotmail.co.uk. We are hoping to keep Facebook updated with occasional devotional contributions. Anyone willing to offer an occasional piece should speak to Greg.

Carols in the Close
There is communal Carol Singing led by the Coventry Rock Choir and St Andrew’s band on Wednesday 19th December at 6pm in Birch Close, Allesley Green.

Carols around the Tree
A carol event is scheduled at the Sutton Avenue shops on Saturday 22nd December, with communal singing at 1pm and 6pm around a community sponsored Christmas Tree. All welcome.

Tots Praise
Our next Tots Praise for pre-school children and their carers takes place on Tuesday 11th December at 9.15am. Our craft activities, songs and story will be themed around the nativity.

Cleaning
We now have a trio of volunteers who have agreed to take on the cleaning of the church. It would be helpful still to have another team of 3 so we always have cover. It takes about 1.5 hours each Friday from 1pm. If you would like to know more about what it entails please speak to Greg, Fran or Jackie Lynch.

Font Remains
The removal of the old stone font has resulted in the base, which was made of very high-quality stone, being rendered into pieces large and small which have been deposited behind the church. Anyone who wants to use either the larger pieces decoratively or the smaller pieces as rubble is welcome to help themselves. We would encourage a voluntary contribution to church funds by way of payment.

Service of Prayer for Christian Unity
It is St Andrews’ turn to host the annual service for Christian Unity which will take place on Sunday 20th January at 6.30pm. If you are willing to volunteer to act as sidesperson, read, play/sing or provide refreshments, please speak to Greg.

Chaplaincy Coordinator
Warwick University are looking to recruit a Chaplaincy Coordinator. The closing date for applications is 12th December. Full details can be found at: https://atsv7.wcn.co.uk/search_engine/jobs.cgi?owner=5062452&ownertype=fair&jcode=1780422&vt_template=1457&adminview=1
