Pews News – 23rd December 2018

23rd December 2018 – Fourth Sunday of Advent

Welcome
St Andrew’s Church welcomes allcomers, whether this is your first time or thousandth time in church. You are welcome whatever your age, gender, marital status, disability, race or sexuality. You are welcome whether you have a deep and mature faith in Christ; are uncertain and still seeking; or have no faith. If you are new to church, please do take a welcome leaflet to be found in the pews; and do not hesitate to ask one of the welcomers if you have any queries.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all our readers!
Greg and Fran wish to express the deepest thanks to all those who have sent cards, presents and good wishes this Christmas

Brandon Gurney Award
Many congratulations to Niamh McIntire who became the first recipient of the Brandon Gurney Award for Children’s Church’s brightest star. Thanks to Brandon’s mum, Louise, and other members of his family, who attended church last Sunday to present the award on the first anniversary of his death.

Thanks
To all who have taken extra duties at Christmas: cleaning, reading, offering refreshments, acting as sides people etc.

Well Done
To Mike Lynch who was very busy in the run up to Christmas (not forgetting Betty who knitted all the scarves), making wooden snowmen. They have delighted many who have bought them, but more importantly, Mike donated the sum of £900 he raised for Zoe’s place. Excellent result for all.

Toy Service
What a fantastic response to our Toy appeal this year (special mention to Martin Neale, who brought hundreds of toys). These have now gone to Coventry City Mission to be distributed across the city to children who otherwise would have little or nothing at Christmas.

Christmas Fayre
Many thanks to the organizers of the Christmas Fayre (Jackie & Gill) which raised £1,000. Thanks to all who came and staffed stalls and to those who supported the Fayre by spending their money.

Christmas Services
We will be hosting Crib Services on Christmas Eve at 2.30 and 4pm, a very popular family occasion. This year, the theme is: Who is the Saviour of the World? Later, on Christmas Eve, there will be service of Holy Communion at 11pm to welcome in Christmas Day, with a shorter communion service the following morning at 10am. There will be a regular communion service next Sunday, December 20th at 10am.

Boxing Day
There will be no midweek service on Boxing Day.

Flower List
The new flower list for 2019 is now at the back of church. If you would like to pay for flowers for a particular week, please fill your name in as soon as possible to get the date you want. Unfortunately, the cost of the flowers will be £12 per week, £10 is no longer feasible. I am sorry about this. Thank you, Ann Dove.

Churchyard Fund
The PCC are keen to maintain the churchyard at its most pleasing, but it costs money we don’t have to pay for a full cutting, strimming and tidying regime. Anyone wishing to give to a churchyard fund to address this should place any gift in a clearly marked envelope. We are very grateful for the generous gifts already received.

Worship 4 All
The next Worship 4 All service will have an epiphany theme, as it takes place on January 6th, Twelfth Night. All welcome to this interactive, contemporary service. There will also be our regular pattern of 8am Communion Service and Ignatian Service at 6.30pm.

Lunch n Chat Mark 2
Lunch n Chat which has been running for over 10 years has been extremely successful in providing comfort and company to those newly bereaved. Because of the success of the group, we are launching a parallel group on Tuesday lunch times from the end of January. If you know anyone who is newly bereaved and might wish to come along, please put them in touch with us.

Font Remains
The removal of the old stone font has resulted in the base, which was made of very high-quality stone, being rendered into pieces large and small which have been deposited behind the church. Anyone who wants to use either the larger pieces decoratively or the smaller pieces as rubble is welcome to help themselves. We would encourage a voluntary contribution to church funds by way of payment.

Cleaning
We now have a trio of volunteers who have agreed to take on the cleaning of the church. It would be helpful still to have another team of 3 so we always have cover. It takes about 1.5 hours each Friday from 1pm. If you would like to know more about what it entails please speak to Greg, Fran or Jackie Lynch.

Service of Prayer for Christian Unity
It is St Andrews’ turn to host the annual service for Christian Unity which will take place on Sunday January 20th at 6.30pm. If you are willing to volunteer to act as sidesperson, read, play/sing or provide refreshments, please speak to Greg.
