31st March 2019 – The Fourth Sunday of Lent – Mothering Sunday
St Andrew’s Church welcomes allcomers, whether this is your first time or thousandth time in church. You are welcome whatever your age, gender, marital status, disability, race or sexuality. You are welcome whether you have a deep and mature faith in Christ; are uncertain and still seeking; or have no faith. If you are new to church, please do take a welcome leaflet to be found in the pews; and do not hesitate to ask one of the welcomers if you have any queries.
A very happy Mother’s Day to all mums. We have a special message for you this morning.
Every six years, our Electoral Roll has to be renewed. 2019 is such a year. Everyone who has previously been on the Electoral Roll should fill out a very short form to reapply. There are a number of advantages to being on the Electoral Roll around rights to baptism, funerals and weddings, as well as eligibility for church office and voting rights at the AGM. It is also vital to St Andrew’s to have the most reliable record of its membership, so we would urge everyone to take 2 minutes to do this. Forms are available from Greg, Phil or Lesley Harrison, our Electoral Roll officer. Anyone who lives in the parish or who has worshipped at St Andrew’s for 6 months or more is eligible.
Many thanks to all those who completed the discipleship survey. Results have been encouraging. 77% of the congregation now say they pray most days compared to 73% in 2015. 35% of the congregation say that they read the Bible most days compared to 28% in 2015. We seek to encourage you to do these things. Please let one of the clergy or Sue or Lesley know how we may support/encourage you in this.
Altar Setting up
We have a small, dedicated band of altar servers, which needs additional people. Setting up the altar is fairly straightforward, and full training will be given. Volunteers will be asked to arrive at church for 9.30am. Please speak to Rita if you would like to know more.
We have been saddened by the deaths of three members of the congregation over the last week or so: Mary Lee, Stan Cooper and Adrian Rawlings. Please hold their families in your prayers. The memorial service for Mary Lee was hosted at St Andrew’s last Thursday. Stan’s funeral takes place at St Andrew’s on Wednesday 17th April at 2pm and Adrian’s on Monday 8th April at 12 noon.
Rock Solid Returns – a group for young people
The Children’s Council are pleased to announce that Nick Tooby has volunteered to run Rock Solid on the first and third Sunday in each month. This will provide an opportunity for our young folk (10-14 year olds) to meet, have fun and enjoy Christian fellowship together from 6.30-8pm. To get this successfully off the ground Nick needs your support. Please consider if you can help with the sessions and please pray for the success of this venture. We will be dramatizing the story of the last week of Jesus’ life on Palm Sunday, April 14th, at our 10am service. Come early for a good seat!
Thanks to all those who supported recent social events: Elvis Tribute and Quiz Night. There was a fantastic turnout for each and between the two events £1250 raised towards church funds. Sadly, the Barn Dance had to be cancelled because of lack of support.
Kids Klub, who work with primary school aged children on Tuesday evenings from 5-6pm at Limbrick Wood Baptist Church, are looking for someone to operate their AV system. No prior knowledge necessary. It’s just a question of pressing buttons. Please speak to Greg or Emma Wildman if you can help.
Thanks to two generous grants, we are able to proceed with a much-needed refurbishment of our kitchen and side room. We have sufficient money to replace the carpet tiles in the side room with something similar, but have taken the view that a vinyl covering would be much longer lasting and much easier to clean. We are therefore £1500 short of the necessary funds. We are inviting individual members of the congregation to give £50 towards this. We need 30 to be willing to do so, and already have 18 pledges. Many thanks to those who have been so generous. Any gifts should be placed into an envelope marked ‘kitchen’ and given to Greg or Jackie. If you are able to gift aid, this will add 25% to your gift at no extra cost.
Leaflets advertising our Easter programme are now available. Please note that the Passover Supper requires booking in advance by putting your name down on the sheet at the back of church on a first-come, first-served basis. There are only two places left. Anyone wishing to help by reading, setting up the altar or acting as sidespersons at our extra services should speak to Greg.

Bannerbrook Park Easter Hunt
A fun filled family Easter hunt organised by St Andy’s Church. Come and find the clues to solve the Easter word to win a Chocolate egg kindly donated by the Penny Farthing pub! Refreshments and biscuit decorating will also be available for a voluntary donation. There is no charge for this event, just good family fun! Come and find us on Saturday 13th April between 1.30pm and 3pm at Bannerbrook Park (just after the first play area)!
Annual Plant Sale
We will be holding our Annual Plant Sale on Saturday 27th April from 10am to 12 noon. If anyone would like to donate plants, ornamental pots etc. we can arrange collection. We should also be grateful for any help on the day, serving refreshments etc. If you can help please contact David, Trevor or Gill.
There will be a sponsored ride and stride event on Saturday Sept 14th, starting at St Andrew’s and taking in 12-15 churches in the Diocese on the way to the most southern part of the diocese down in Shipston. Anyone is welcome to join us, either by walking or cycling or by becoming part of the wonderful support crew. You may walk the whole distance (approx. 40 miles) or just one leg from one church to another. Please see Greg or Veronika for further details.
Access to Church Lane
You may be aware that roadworks have begun at the junction of Church Lane and Hockley Lane. It is worth allowing an extra 5 minutes for your travel time to church if you come by car or bus over the next few weeks. Forget me Not has been cancelled on March 26th and April 9th.
Appeal for Volunteers from RAWKUS and Environmental Sustainability Team
Every year, tonnes of edible food and equipment are left in halls by students moving out. Whilst we encourage everyone to donate to local charities before moving out, RAWKUS are an important part of reducing the waste left behind! At the end of each term, RAWKUS volunteers combine to remove the leftover food that is still in date and edible as well as unwanted goods from Halls of Residence. The food and goods collected are then distributed to local charities in Coventry and Leamington, including food banks. The Spring collection of food and other items were collected by Carriers of Hope, Emmaus and Leamington Winter Shelter. In total we donated 1.249 tonnes worth, therefore saving all of that from ending up in Waste to Energy. Our next collection is June 29th and 30th for the Summer move outs where nearly all students across campus will move out. This is a large task so we will need as many volunteers as we can get. Weekly Giving Envelopes
Thanks to everyone who donates regularly to St Andrew’s and St Andy’s. April sees the start of a new Tax Year so new boxes of Weekly Giving Envelopes for the next twelve months are at the back of the church. Should anyone wish to join the Envelope scheme please contact Richard Marr (01676 522697). Regular giving by Envelope or by Standing Order helps us plan the church’s finances in the coming year and we are most grateful to all those who give regularly every week or every month. If you are a regular giver and a tax payer but haven’t already completed a Gift Aid Form, please do so as soon as possible to enable us to recover the tax you have already paid on your giving. Forms can be found in the dispenser at the back of the church. Should you wish to increase the amount you put in the Weekly Giving Envelope or your Standing Order, please do so any time as you do not need to complete a new Gift Aid Form. Last year we recovered £14898 from the Inland Revenue as a result of your Gift Aid Giving.
The boxes have been collected, the money counted, and a cheque for £1067.36 has been sent to the Children’s Society. My thanks again go to all the loyal supporters of the society, a very worthy charity protecting vulnerable children. Over my 22 years of collecting we have raised £27, 697.45. That’s an awful lot of small change that we don’t really miss, but when added up, can make a massive difference. So, a huge thank you to you all. See you next year. Jackie Lynch
Invitation to Ella Joy Richardson’s Baptism
Phil and Anne Richardson would love to invite you to be a part of Ella Joy’s baptism on Sunday 28th April at 2.30pm in St James Church, Leamington Road, CV3 6GT (where Anne is serving her curacy). It will be followed by drinks and cake in the Church Centre. Thank you so much for all your love and support over the last few months, we really hope you can join us to officially welcome her to the Christian family. Our next service for pre-schoolers and their carers is on Tuesday 9th April. Doors open at 8.45am for tea and toast and craft activities, with stories, songs and prayer from 9.15am. This week we will be telling the story of the Walls of Jericho.
Out next Kidz Praise service for Primary School children and their families takes place on Thursday 4th April. Tea and toast will be served from 3.15pm, when there will be craft and other activities. The service will begin by 4pm when we will be telling a story entitled: Down the Well.

Lunch n Chat Mark 2
Lunch n Chat which has been running for over 10 years has been extremely successful in providing comfort and company to those newly bereaved. Because of the success of the group, we have launched a parallel group on Tuesday lunch times on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of the month at 12 noon. If you know anyone who is newly bereaved and might wish to come along, please put them in touch with us.
