Bulletin – 23rd October 2020

Church Bulletin

Greg and Fran’s announcement on Sunday will for many people have come out of the blue. The responses were as expected. Feelings of initial shock were immediately followed by a focus on what we as a church and community were going to lose after they’ve gone.

For some people it posed the questions, “who will take our daughter’s wedding next year?” or “what about our babies christening?” or “I’d hoped Greg would be around to take my funeral”. For others, the thought of Greg not visiting their school, attending a particular community event or standing leading the services in church, jumped to the forefront of their minds.

Strangely, probably because I’d had a little bit more time to absorb the announcement, my first thought on Sunday was very different. It struck me as Greg was announcing the news that we would now have to get that heavy wooden vicars board down off the wall and get it updated!

As I looked at the board and the lists of all the previous vicars, I reflected on the other occasions, when like Greg, previous vicars had stood and announced they were leaving. I’m sure their congregations would have equally been shocked and asked the “what’s next questions”, but on each occasion God had a plan. Each time God led someone to Eastern Green to lead his people forward.

So, although it’s sad to be saying farewell to Greg and Fran as they leave us in January 2021, God has revealed a plan for them. He is no doubt also sowing the seed in the heart of someone else to step forward and become the next name to be inscribed on the vicar’s board in church.

Acts 14 vs 23 “Paul and Barnabas appointed elders for them in each church and with prayer committed them to the Lord in whom they had put their trust”

Holiday

Greg is now on holiday until Sunday 1st November. Any queries should be addressed to one of the church wardens (Nick Tooby or Becky Crowe) or the parish administrator (Julie Crow).

Memorial Service

We will be hosting a Memorial Service online on November 8th at 6 pm.  The service is an opportunity to remember all those who have died in the parish over the last 12 months. Names will be read aloud in what we think will still be a very moving service. We are happy to add names of those who died longer ago or elsewhere. Please contact Julie with details.

Toys

Despite Covid restrictions, it is still our intention to collect toys this year for Christmas. They will be distributed via the Family Centre in Tile Hill to children in the area who might otherwise go without (not least those whose families have lost jobs through lockdown). The centre currently has 100 children on their books that they are trying to support. As always, we will ask you to bring only new toys, unwrapped, and place them under the Christmas tree. Covid rules mean that we will have only limited windows to do this and that the deadline is set for 5 p.m. on Sunday 6th December. We know some of you have started Xmas shopping already and might appreciate this early warning.

Light Party

At our 10 o’clock service on 1st November, we are hosting a Light Party for our children, with party games; and a story about a party from the Bible. If you know any children who might want to come (numbers strictly limited), they will require an invitation. Please approach Julie at administrator@standrews-eg.org.uk
