Bulletin – 18th January 2021

Church Bulletin

The slow and painful process of packing has begun. However, it has not been without its moments of light relief. One of the best things is that I have been finding money! Not enough to replace the dishwasher that has decided to give up the ghost (there are currently 7 of us living chez Smith, so that’s a lot of washing up!) But every little helps. How long it has been tucked away, goodness only knows. I found a spare 2008 diary at the same time, so that gives you an idea. I don’t think of myself as a hoarder (that’s Fran!), but there are things we have kept that it’s hard to justify. A nice notebook is always useful you might think, but not if you already have nine of them. And what was the rationale for keeping the exclusion letter we were sent from Blue Coat School explaining why one of our sons was going to have to be home schooled for a couple of days after racking up too many detentions? (I never quite understood their logic – if you misbehaved you had to do an hour’s extra school, but if you were persistent enough you could have two days off!) Those are not fond memories, and yet I can smile now because all three boys have turned out okay despite the worst prognostications of Blue Coat. In the same way, I am trying to be careful about what we take to our new home so that we’re not overburdened with unnecessary stuff, but I know that the most important thing we will be taking is something we won’t need cupboards for: our precious memories.

Sunday

There will be no service posted Sunday morning, but there will be coffee at 11 a.m. for anyone who wants to say a virtual farewell to Greg and Fran. Please contact Greg, the parish administrator or one of the church wardens for the access codes.

The regular St Andy’s service will take place via zoom at 3.30pm which will be an opportunity for the St Andy’s congregation to say goodbye.

A live service will be streamed at 6.30pm. The link to this will be posted prominently on our website. You will be able to access this from 6.20pm to check that everything is working. You will see a welcome message and a countdown. The service is live, which means that you can join at any time, but you will miss whatever you have missed. We will record the service and will make it available to watch at a later date.

Sunday Coffee

Sunday coffee gatherings via zoom will continue after Greg and Fran’s departure provided there is sufficient demand. There will be a new link for this, which will be published in the bulletin.

Service collection and online gifts/donations

We trialled an online Christmas Church Collection page for our Christmas services this year and quite a few people used it to make their church collection / gift. The people I’ve spoken to have said they found it easy to find and use. We have decided that we will continue to offer this approach for people who attend our online services and normally give via the collection plate, or who may wish to make a donation to the work of the church. The attached link is the way to make a gift and this will also be included on the service link each week. Can I say thank you to everyone who continues to support the work of St Andrew’s Church your contributions are very much appreciated. Nick Tooby (Churchwarden).

Building our Faith Wednesday Evening Bible Study

Our weekly Wednesday evening group begins again on Wednesday 20th January at 7.30pm on zoom. For four weeks commencing on the 20th we will be looking at Women in the Bible and the first session will be led by Greg focusing on Esther.

The format for the evening is a brief talk and then a chance to share together, ask questions and discuss the theme for the evening. If you have been part of the group previously, we look forward to welcoming you back; if you have not joined us before or never been to a group like this, now may be the time to think about joining us.

Please contact Sue Masters for the access codes.

If you are interested and have questions, or you need more information please contact me.

Corona Update

The number of corona infections are exceptionally high in Coventry; and it remains vital that social interactions are kept to the absolute minimum. If instructed to self-isolate, please comply fully. Let us know if you need anything. We have willing volunteers only too ready to shop or collect prescriptions.

Book Club

The next Book Club meeting is on Monday 1st March 2021 at 7.30pm on Zoom. The book we will be reading and discussing is Plainsong by Kent Haruf.; ‘a novel of haunting beauty from one of America’s greatest writers of our time, Plainsong explores the grace and hope of every human life and mankind’s infinite capacity for love.’

We will meet on 1st to share our views on the book and to discuss some of the questions it raises for us. The group is open to all; if you have never been part of a book club this might be the time to give it a try. If you are interested in being part of the group please contact Sue Masters (07958 322026).

Please Pray

Please pray for Mike Lynch who has Covid-19 in hospital (they are looking for a care home for safer convalescence); the family of Flix Haynes, whose funeral takes place today and Marilyn Starr whose funeral takes place on Thursday; and for all medical staff working exceptionally long hours under great stress.
